Gqom is a genre deeply rooted in the streets of Durban. How does your personal connection to the genre influence your music and performances?
Some of the early influences of Gqom originated from the Eastern Cape, in addition to KwaZulu-Natal. A subgenre of Gqom, known as “isijokojoko”, emerged from the Eastern Cape. Gqom has been an integral part of my life, thanks to my early exposure to it, which has contributed to my profound love for the genre.
What are some of the challenges and rewards of being a Gqom DJ in a rapidly evolving music scene, both locally and globally?
Not everyone is familiar with the new age Gqom due to individual differences in music consumption. As a result, some audiences may need to be introduced to the sound gradually. With Amapiano’s recent surge in popularity, many music consumers have become accustomed to its distinctive sound, making it more challenging for them to adjust to the harder, more intense sound of Gqom.

As a DJ, what are your thoughts on the future of Gqom, and how do you see your role in pushing the genre forward?
For a while now, I’ve been predicting Gqom’s resurgence, and witnessing it unfold in real-time is truly surreal. Gqom is the future, and its artists are pioneering something entirely new and innovative. As Que aptly puts it, “We don’t play the same Gqom.” As a trans girl in a male-dominated industry, my presence alone contributes to pushing the genre forward especially due to the exposure and recognition trans girls are experiencing both locally and internationally which also contributes to a greater level of social progression. Additionally, my unique sound approach and sets are helping to drive the evolution of new-age Gqom.
